Power electronics plays a central role in integrating renewable energy sources into modern electrical power systems. Solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, and battery storage systems require power converters to regulate voltage, control power flow, and connect safely to the electricity grid. As the proportion of renewable energy increases, these converters must perform additional functions, including voltage regulation, frequency support, fault response, and power-quality improvement. This review examines developments in converter topologies, semiconductor devices, control strategies, energy storage integration, and grid-supporting technologies. It also discusses the growing importance of grid-forming inverters in power systems with fewer conventional synchronous generators. Particular attention is given to the benefits and limitations of silicon carbide and gallium nitride devices, multilevel converters, and digital control methods. The article highlights remaining challenges related to reliability, protection, thermal management, cybersecurity, and cost. Future progress will depend on coordinated advances in semiconductor technology, converter design, and power-system control. The review concludes that power electronics is essential for building efficient, flexible, and resilient electricity networks with high levels of renewable energy.
